Want a chase? 1980 George Brett was batting an even .300 on June 2 through 158 plate appearances. He then batted .470 over his next 263 PA and climbed/chased to reach .400 for the first time on Aug 17! Alas, he fell below for good 18 days later.

Hi Sam, I think the home run totals are a 'chase' because it's about the Total Number Of Home Runs, which the chaser is trying to get up to. Random civilian fans are not thinking about the pace as much as you. Of course, then when you start talking batting average, well, the stat IS a pace, so...

I think even if ahead of pace they are chasing it. You can be on pace for 100 Home Runs. But you are chasing the record (62 or 73). Even hitting .400 you are chasing. You might be hitting .412 but all your future are at bats are not hits yet.

"I don’t want to brag, but I’m like, really sophisticated."

Great stuff!
